Curious about Territorial era jails and frontier justice? Downtown Globe opens the cell-block doors each month for a Saturday morning where you can explore the century-old Gila County Jail; just around the corner from the Cobre Valley Arts Center -- a massive building that dominates downtown Globe, and served as the county courthouse for most of the prior century. Start with a brief introductory video, then step back in time for an experience in the Territorial Arizona Jail. See more photos, special events -- connect with volunteers$5 per person suggested donation for entry - and proceeds fund care, maintenance and restoration of the building.A ‘Lil HistoryBuilt before Arizona was officially a state, the Globe jail served the territory starting in 1910 through February 14, 1912, when Arizona received its Statehood and continued from then 'til 1981 when the facility saw its last prisoner. Lovingly restored, the building is now a museum and visitor center offering old west territorial facility tours daily by appointment, and also on the Second Saturday each month.Discover more of Gila County's history at:
